Value Analysis Template

Kaizen Report Template
Spreadsheet Version | Slide Version | VA-NVA Quadrant Diagram

Value analysis is a foundational element of Lean thinking. It focuses on how each process step contributes to what truly matters to the ultimate customer or end user. This value analysis matrix template provides a structured way to examine every activity within a process and determine whether it adds value. It allows teams visualize where flow is interrupted, where waste accumulates, and where improvement opportunities exist.

This template helps classify each activity of a process as Value-Added (VA), Non–Value-Added (NVA), or Essential Non–Value-Added (ENVA). It captures key details, including activity time and the type of non-value-added work present. In addition, it includes simple analytics and charts that highlight time distribution and make it easier to communicate findings internally.

This template is a Microsoft Excel worksheet that can be easily customized to align with your operational needs. For example, you can add more process steps, expand the non-value-added categories, or include fields like “Reason Why This Step Exists Today” to uncover elimination opportunities. You can also link the worksheet to the eight wastes framework (TIMWOODS) or add additional waste types for deeper insight. A Microsoft PowerPoint version is also available for clear and engaging communication with teams and stakeholders.
