Four Field Matrix

A Four Field Matrix is an effective model for planning, organizing and making decisions. It is a two-dimensional chart that consists of four equal-sized quadrants, each will describe different aspects of information. It helps you organize your ideas or information in a logical manner that makes sense. Complex problems can be broken down into easier to handle groups by considering two of the important characteristics (represented on the X and Y axes). For example, a team may select the most appropriate improvement projects based on the implementation time and the resource availability. Sometimes it is referred to as the Four Quadrant Matrix or the Four Celled Matrix.

The four field matrix is often used in the following scenarios:

  • To prioritize work and personal activities based on the Eisenhower method – importance urgency matrix.
  • To evaluate the strategic position of an organization – SWOT matrix.
  • To classify stakeholders according to the power they hold and how likely they are to be interested in a project – power interest matrix.
  • To select the projects that will have the greatest impact with the least amount of money, time or effort – project prioritization matrix.
  • To select the appropriate methodology for problem solving and process improvement – project methodology matrix.

This template is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation file that you can use and modify to suit your specific needs. It comes with twelve different themes to choose from to suit the varying tastes. Think about and decide what you really want, determine the type of matrix appropriate for your situation, determine the two most important characteristics to place on the X and Y axes, select the theme you would like to use, then sort the ideas and information in the appropriate quadrants of the matrix.

You may use the ready to fill text-boxes which make it easier to fill the matrix. Just fill the text-boxes with your content then drag and drop them into the relevant quadrant. Please help us to make this template better by providing us with your comments or suggestions.
